Did You Know?
Dedicated to helping underprivileged children
Since our inauguration variety - Tent 52 have raised over £3,000,000 to help disabled and underprivileged children in Jersey, and the following are just an example of our present fund raising activities: The Annual Ball, which this year is being held at the Hotel de France on Saturday 10th November ; The Bowlathon at Jersey Bowl on Saturday 20th October; Variety Open Golf Day at La Moye on Friday 29th June, together with a variety of lunches thoughout the year and sponsorship for the London Marathon.
Tent 52 are very forunate to have a very active Ladies section that contributes in many ways to our fund raising activities and are always there to lend a helping hand. The Ladies of Variety have just celebrated their thirtieth anniversary in Jersey.
Over the last ten years Variety has undertaken the following major projects:
We have purchased 16 Sunshine Coaches for local Schools and Youth Clubs, making 42 in total.
Launched 'Spirit of Variety' sailing catamaran and 'Spirit of Young Variety' fishing boat.
Built a Library, a Sensory Room and set up the 'Toy Library' at MONT A l'Abbe School.
Built a Hydrotherapy Pool, a Sensory Room, purchased a Wheelchair friendly car and helped landscape the garden at Oakwell Children's Respite Home. At present we are in the process of building a much needed new extension to the home.
An Extension to Maufant Youth Club, which we originally built in 1983
Purchased a Mobile Youth Bus.
Furnished and purchased medical equipment and toys for the Children's Treatment Rooms and play area at the Accident and Emergency Department of the General Hospital.
A new playground for Samares Primary School.
Assistance to the value of £10,000 was given to First Tower Community Centre last year.
Early last year we replaced the 'Spirit of Variety' with ' The Vernon Lilford Spirit of Variety', which is a bigger catamaran and better equipped for wheelchair bound sailors, the majority of the cost being borne by a most generous bequest from the late Lord Vernon Lilford. Lady Pamela Lilford named the catamaran in May 2006, in her late husbands memory.
Our latest project has been to suppy new gym equipment for Mont a l'abbe Special Gymnastics Club (this has been the Variety Monday Club project in 2006) and The Ladies of Variety are financing three special gymnasts to take part in the European Games which have just taken place in Rome.
We are also in the process of building a new 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom extension at Oakwell Children's Respite Home at a cost of approximately £100,000.
We have donated £2,500 towards a trip to Manchester United for the Jersey Learning Difficulties Football Team.
And the work goes on -
Barkers (members) pay an annual subscription, which covers the administration cost of Variety, so that EVERY PENNY raised by Variety is spent on disabled and underprivileged children of our Island. Without the help of Variety here in Jersey, many children would suffer.
